What are the methods of insulating garage doors?

There are three main ways to insulate a garage door. You can do it yourself, hire a professional or install an already insulated garage door. The easiest option is to have a professional install a pre-insulated garage door. Make sure you specify an insulated garage door, as not all garage doors come with insulation. No matter how you insulate your garage door, these four materials are commonly used to insulate garage doors:

Foam Board Insulation: There are several types of foam board that can be used to insulate garage doors. To make the garage door insulation process easier, you can purchase a foam board insulation kit. These kits include pre-cut panels that fit into most standard garage door frames. It's best to use foam with reflective foil on one or both sides to further block heat in and out of the garage.

Spray Foam Insulation: In addition to foam board insulation, you can also spray foam on garage door panels. Although it takes more time to apply this type of insulation, it is higher quality and lasts longer than foam board. The two main types of foam spray are polystyrene and polyurethane. Both types are liquid foam and have a higher density than foam board. Polyurethane has higher flexural strength, is more durable and lasts longer.

Cellulose Insulation: This insulation must also be sprayed on garage doors, but it provides better results than spray foam. It is made from organic materials such as plant fibers, cotton, wood or recycled materials. However, it is more expensive than foam board or foam spray.

Fiberglass insulation: This insulation is the cheapest type you can buy. It features insulating batt panels, sometimes with a vinyl finish. It is best painted on the garage door inside the garage.

Most pre-insulated garage doors have polyurethane spray foam between the two layers of steel to protect the insulation.
